Whaleback Preserve opened in 1971 as a non-proprietary hunting and fishing club. The Club leases lands primarily from the Lindsay & Mapes Family and Whaleback Farm, Inc. for members to pursue upland birds, trout, bass, deer, wild turkey and predators. One of the primary reasons for the forming of Whaleback was to provide a vehicle to allow the lands to remain undeveloped and further the agrarian and sporting use of the property. The lands have been farmed, hunted and fished for over 220 years. Whaleback has offered safe quality upland pheasant hunting for 50 years.
Founder Bruce Lindsay, an avid Bird Hunter Created the Preserve with NYS DEC Class A license. Since that time, quality Gamebirds have been stocked annually for paying guests. In 2006, the Farm transitioned Hunting to a Non-Equity Club for up to 65 paying leaseholder members. We are a “family friendly Preserve” not a gun club. Currently, Members enjoys the privilege of private hunting on 600 acres of the best managed pheasant hunting grounds in Western, New York. Bob White Quail and Pheasant are the Preserves predominant stocked gamebird priority for hunting with bird dogs.
Whaleback Preserve is environmentally conscious creating organic food cover plots annually for upland hunting with natural yet managed cover. We maintain 8 separate private upland bird hunting field locations of ideal Pheasant & Quail habitat on the Preserve. Ongoing improvements to all hunting areas are assessed annually by owners with members suggestions. Hunting areas are professionally planted yearly with food cover perfect for our climate. There are also field areas which may be used for dog training June through October. A continental shoot area on the south farm enables high flying driven pheasants launched above shooting buts in fall by reservation. We stress the highest quality mature Mongolian Ring-neck Pheasants, Bob White Quail, & Chukar. This is one of the most beautiful upland bird hunting grounds in the North East.
Our Pheasants are large mature Mongolian Ring Necks ranging throughout fields with professionally managed grasses, sorghum, millet, reed canary grass, and natural bush lots. This is perfect cover for enjoying bird dogs in upland hunts. Members’ may choose from guided hunts with superb pointers, or using their own gun dog for classic Wing Shooting unsurpassed in the region. In the fall season, members also find partridge, woodcock, and quail coveys. You will experience the joy of Wing Shooting in safe, private fields managed for your sport. After the hunt, members return to enjoy the Clubhouse designed by hunters to accommodate hunters needs for practicality with an outfitter room, locker room, and Member’s Lounge area.
Whaleback is created for sports men and women with challenging birds, wild turkey and whitetail deer, and two stocked ponds The Club also offers a challenging sporting clays course, shooting instruction, and an attractive clubhouse lodge for weekend dining, entertainment and social events.
